The Extra Milers look forward to supporting over 5,000 runners at Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K

The clock is ticking down to the second Run 4 Wales event of 2024, when over 5,000 runners will arrive at Roald Dahl Plass to take part in the Brecon Carreg Cardiff 10K. Set in the heart of Cardiff’s historic Bay, the route offers runners a flat, fast and friendly course, with great views and plenty of support from spectators. Passing iconic landmarks, including the Senedd, Port Teigr and Cardiff Bay Barrage, the event which takes place on Sunday 19 May will attract runners of all abilities, with many running their first 10K event.

The Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K, like all Run 4 Wales events, is only made possible by the support of the event volunteer team, known as the Extra Milers. Volunteers can choose from a variety of roles on event day and all are united in their support for runners and the event. It’s not too late to get involved – we need over 150 volunteers to support the runners. Check out the volunteer opportunities on our website and come along and join in the fun!

“The volunteer organisation was excellent. As a first timer, it was smooth and easy! The instructions were clear and nothing felt panicked or rushed.” ABP Newport Marathon Festival 2024 Extra Miler

With over 5,000 runners taking part, the key volunteer roles on event day will be helping at the finish line (giving out medals, t shirts and water), supporting the runners in the Bag Drop (and having a chat before and after the race), rehydrating and cheering on runners at the midway water point and course marshalling along the route.

Karen will be with a team of Course Marshals in her usual spot at the Barrage turn point to cheer on and direct runners. Karen has been volunteering with R4W for many years now and this time it’ll be a family affair, with her husband Chad guide-running (supporting a visually impaired runner around the course) and her daughter Ailsa participating in the event for the first time. We’re still looking for some more Course Marshals to join the team, so if you fancy a morning out at Cardiff Bay, supporting and cheering on the runners please sign up as an Extra Miler or get in touch for more information.

“All volunteers are absolute heroes and I can’t thank them enough for encouraging us along the way and giving up their time” ABP Newport Marathon Festival Runner 2024

Sean will also be out of the course, supporting the runners with a megaphone and foam finger! Sean, a keen runner himself for over nine years, enjoys trying the different R4W volunteer roles and had volunteered at previous events at the water station, finish line and as a course marshal. He says: “After taking part in a number of running events I wanted to support others and give back. I did some research and found the Extra Milers and Run 4 Wales. I started to volunteer at events and never looked back. Volunteering is vital and just as much fun as taking part.”

We are very excited to announce that there will be an all-female pacer and back marker team at Cardiff Bay 10K, supported by She Runs: Cardiff. She Runs:Cardiff is a women only social running group, with a growing membership, providing a supportive and inclusive running community for new and experienced female runners.

Nia, a member of She Runs: Cardiff, volunteered with R4W for the first time at the recent ABP Newport Marathon Festival and will be a 75 minute pacer at the Cardiff Bay event. She is looking forward to being part of the all-female pacer team and says: “Volunteering has been a wonderful experience for me. I love being able to support people with their running goals and volunteering as a pacer has allowed me to do this. It’s so much more rewarding getting other people across the finish line than doing it for myself.”

“All the Extra Milers are absolute legends. For them to give up their time to just hand things out to runners and keep it all going is brilliant. They are the real heroes on the day and my thanks to them again” ABP Newport Marathon Festival Runner 2024

As usual there will be a team of Back Markers supporting runners taking it more slowly. Look out for Anna-Jane, Run Leader with She Runs:Cardiff and regular R4W volunteer and supervisor at Roath Lake Water Station for the Cardiff Half Marathon. She told us: “Having run this event before, it is great to be able to give back and support the runners taking part this time. At SheRuns, we celebrate #partyattheback so back marking is the ideal position for us!”

At the midway water station, Cardiff Police Youth Volunteers will be back for the third year running in their regular volunteering spot. Abbie, a Police Youth Volunteer, who supported Run 4 Wales events in 2023 said: “Volunteering with Run 4 Wales is an amazing experience. You see that the race isn’t all about winning but taking part. You can also see that by cheering people on and encouraging them to keep going has a huge impact on them.”

Are you part of a community or young persons group? Groups are welcome to get involved. Email our friendly volunteer team for more information: volunteers@run4wales.org.

Extra Milers all receive an event t-shirt and bag, as well as free parking, a lunch pack, snacks and drinks. R4W also gifts Tempo Time Credits to all volunteers (a national volunteer reward scheme). A detailed Event Information Sheet is sent out before the event, with lots of information about what to expect on event day, where to park and who to meet on arrival. All volunteer teams are supported and looked after by experienced Run 4 Wales supervisors and our Volunteer Co-ordinators.
