2023 Volunteering Opportunities Launched
A calendar of volunteering opportunities at R4W events for 2023 has been announced. You don’t need to run to get involved!
The Extra Milers volunteers may be relaxing now after a busy 2022 events schedule, culminating in a bumper Cardiff Half weekend in early October but with the release this week of our 2023 events calendar they have something to look forward to.
26 March 2023 – Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run
16 April 2023 – ABP Newport Wales Marathon & 10K
2 July 2023 – Porthcawl 10K
6 August 2023 – Barry Island 10K
1 October 2023 – Cardiff Half Marathon
2023 kicks off with the new look Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K (formerly the Cardiff Bay Run), our popular springtime event and the largest 10K road race in Wales. Save the date for 26th March, when we’ll be looking for 150 volunteers to help out at the start-finish line, the midway water point, in our bag drop tent or as course marshals.
“It’s a really fun day, you meet lots of new people who are all out for the same sense of giving and for fun, and it’s nice to be involved in the buzz of the event”

In April, the ABP Newport Wales Marathon and 10K is returning, moving back into its regular spring slot on 16th April. The route was designed by our very own double Olympic marathon runner Steve Brace (Run 4 Wales’ Race Director) and it can boast being one of the flattest marathon routes in Europe. We’re looking for 250 volunteers to support the event on the day, in the usual event volunteer roles of bag drop support, water station support, course marshal, volunteer photographer and helping at the start-finish line.
“I have volunteered many times for R4W and found this one to be one of the best, enjoyed the roles and interaction with fellow volunteers, runners and R4W staff, all this made the day extra special thank you.”

Later in the year Extra Milers can look forward to the Porthcawl 10K (2nd July) and Barry Island 10K (6th August), before the event calendar comes to a close with the Cardiff Half weekend. There are two volunteering opportunities at the Half. On Saturday 30th September, the Cardiff Half Junior races take place and on Sunday 1st October, the Run 4 Wales flagship event takes place, with the Cardiff Half attracting over 20,000 runners. We’ll be looking for up to 1,000 enthusiastic Extra Milers to support us across the weekend.
As always, Run 4 Wales volunteers receive a t-shirt and bag as part of their volunteering kit, along with snacks and a lunch pack. We issue Tempo Time Credits every time you volunteer with us (find out more about this national volunteer reward scheme here and a 10% discount on the Run 4 Wales online merchandise store.
As part of the Extra Milers community, volunteers also get access to fun competitions and giveaways. At the 2022 Cardiff Half, 4 lucky Extra Milers were randomly chosen to win a prize donated by our partners, with Wizz Air giving away a £200 flight voucher and Hoka contributing a lovely pair of trainers.
Groups are welcome to volunteer too and we were excited to have support from the Cardiff Police Cadets, She Runs: Cardiff, Vale Runners, Newport Social Cycling, Bridgend District Explorer Scouts and Cardiff University Athletics Club, among others.
We also offer corporate volunteering days, so if your place of work has paid volunteering days or organises team building days, then please get in touch.
“I absolutely loved volunteering at this event. It was great meeting other volunteers and the Run 4 Wales team were very welcoming and made me feel part of the team. I will 100% sign up again for the 2023 events. Such a great day and made better with the beautiful blue sky.”
